During the Group B match at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Tony Munyonga displayed yet another moment of brilliance in the field when he made a spectacular running catch to remove Pathum Nissanka, the in-form Sri Lankan.
After his historic century against Australia, Nissanka, who has been having a purple run in the tournament, appeared to be in superb form once more. After Sri Lanka got off to a fast start, he spearheaded their innings with a quick 62 off 41 balls that included eight boundaries. But Zimbabwe's seasoned spinner Graeme Cremer came back just as he was about to attack the final overs.
Both teams were already assured of a spot in the Super 8s, but Zimbabwe, who missed out on the 2024 T20 World Cup, advances undefeated after a brilliant chase of 179 with three balls remaining. Nissanka committed to the reverse sweep after Cremer tossed one up on a length outside off, but he had to provide all of the pace. The ball dipped toward the backward point after taking the top edge. After sprinting back, Munyonga executed an incredible over-the-shoulder catch.

Nissanka and Kusal Perera hit boundaries at free as Sri Lanka surged to 46 without loss in four overs earlier. The hosts slumped from 54 for 0 in 4.6 overs to just 69 runs for the loss of four wickets in the next 63 balls after Perera was dismissed for 22. Nissanka reached another fifty off thirty-five balls, but Zimbabwe continued to pick off wickets with little help. When the 17th over ended, Sri Lanka was at 142/4.
With 62 from 44 balls in his team's 178-7 victory over Australia, Pathum Nissanka, who also produced a brilliant century, maintained his form. Together with co-hosts India, South Africa, and the West Indies, Zimbabwe advances to a Super 8s group. The Windies, who defeated Italy earlier on Thursday to maintain their undefeated record, will be their opponent in their opening game on Monday in Mumbai.
