Team India middle-order batter Tilak Varma has undergone surgery for testicular torsion ahead of the much–awaited ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which is scheduled to start on Saturday, February 7, in India and Sri Lanka.

Notably, Tilak was admitted to a hospital in Rajkot after he experienced severe abdominal pain shortly after having breakfast. This incident happened ahead of Hyderabad’s next fixture in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 season.

Medical results revealed testicular torsion, a condition requiring immediate surgical procedure. The reports suggested that doctors have advised a recovery period of two to four weeks, making his availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup uncertain.

For now, the Southpaw batter has been ruled out of the forthcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 21.

For the unversed, testicular torsion is a medical emergency in which the spermatic cord twists, cutting off blood supply to the testicle and causing sudden, severe pain in the lower abdomen or groin.

Notably, Tilak was India’s top batter in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025, playing a top-class knock in the final against Pakistan. Speaking about his T20I career, in 37 innings, he has scored 1,183 runs at an average of 49.29 and a strike rate of 144.09, including two centuries and six half-centuries.

India’s squad for T20I series against NZ announced & ICC Men’s T20 World Cup: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel (VC), Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan (WK).
