Steve Smith acquired an amazing record to his name as the captain of the Australian Test team. He is currently captaining the Kangaroos in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. He has led Australia to a 2-0 Test series win over Sri Lanka in their own backyard.

Meanwhile, he was also named the Player of the Series for scoring 272 runs in two Tests with two hundreds to his name. With this, his average as the captain in Tests for Australia has risen to 68.98 which has moved him up to the third position in the all-time list of captains with the highest average in Test cricket.

With this information, today we take a look at the top 10 players in Test cricket who have the highest average with the bat in the format as captains.

Top 10 players with the highest averages as captain in Test:

The top-ranked batter with the highest average as captain in Australia is the legendary Sir Don Bradman. He averaged 101.51 in 24 matches as captain of Australia, in which he made 3147 runs. At the second spot is Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara with an average of 69.60 with 1601 runs in 15 Tests as captain.

The 4th spot goes to another Sri Lankan, Mahela Jayawardene, who averaged 59.11, but he captained the islanders in 38 games with 3665 runs. Another legend of the game, Sir Gary Sobers, comes next with a 58.50 average from 39 games as West Indies captain, as he scored 3528.

Graham Gooch of England and Brian Lara of West Indies then follow. Gooch captained England in 34 games, scoring 3582 runs with an average of 58.72, while Lara made 4685 Test runs in 47 games as captain.

The bottom three are Kane Williamson of New Zealand, Greg Chappell of Australia, and Wally Hammond of England. Williamson averaged 57.43 in 40 Tests as Kiwi captain with 3331 runs to his name. Chappell led Australia in 48 Tests with an average of 55.38, and Hammond, a contemporary of Bradman, made 1657 runs as England captain in 20 matches with an average of 55.23.
