During their encounter against Qatar in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Asia Qualifiers 2025 on Saturday at the Terdthai Cricket Ground in Bangkok, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) women's cricket team made an uncommon move. The whole UAE lineup retired out to manage time after dominating with the bat, ultimately winning the match by an overwhelming 163 runs.
UAE skipper Esha Rohit Oza and opener Theertha Satish gave their squad a strong start by batting first. In just 16 overs, the pair established a partnership of 192 runs. Satish provided strong assistance with a 42-ball 74 that featured 11 boundaries, while Oza hammered 113 off 55 balls with 14 fours and five sixes.
UAE and Malaysia, the other team in group B, were eager to earn a result because of the impending possibility of rain. They believed there were enough runs on the board to defend, especially in a tournament like a regional qualifier, where every victory is vital. At that point, Ahmed Raza, the current coach of the squad and former captain of the UAE men's team, performed something that had never been done before.
To find out if they could declare, he went to the match officials. In a first for the sport's international history, the batsmen ran onto the field one by one and announced themselves retired because limited-overs cricket does not allow declarations.
Each batter padded up, stepped to the crease, and retired out as soon as they arrived. This made it possible for the UAE to finish their innings swiftly and bowl before the game was interrupted by bad weather.
As Qatar fell on just 29 runs and was unable to chase the total of 193, the UAE's plan worked flawlessly. While the rest of the team battled against the UAE bowling outfit, only Rizpha Emmanuel was able to put up any resistance, scoring 20 of those runs. With three wickets, Michelle Botha spearheaded the attack, while Katie Thompson added two.
