India’s cricketing future looks brighter than ever, thanks to the sensational rise of 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who is taking the international Youth ODI stage by storm. The young batting prodigy is rewriting the record books with a level of dominance rarely seen at such a young age. In the recently concluded ODI series against Australia U19, Suryavanshi etched his name in history as one of the most prolific run-scorers before turning 16 and also went past Babar Azam in a major record.

In the first two matches of the three-match series, Vaibhav made an immediate impact, scoring 38 and 70 runs respectively. His consistent performances were pivotal in helping India clinch the series early, with a game to go. Though he was dismissed for a modest 16 in the third ODI at the Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane, his overall numbers remain staggering.

Across just 11 Youth ODI innings, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has piled up 556 runs at a formidable average of 50.54. What sets him apart, even more than his consistency, is his explosive strike rate — an impeccable 151.91. This shows that he not only builds innings but also scores at a pace that puts pressure on opposition attacks from the outset.

One of the most historic feats Vaibhav has achieved is breaking the record for the most sixes in Youth ODI history. With 43 sixes to his name, he has surpassed Unmukt Chand’s long-standing record, setting a new benchmark for power-hitting in age-group cricket.

Is Vaibhav Suryavanshi better than Babar Azam?

Statistically, only Pakistan’s Hasan Raza, back in 1997–98, has scored more Youth ODI runs than Vaibhav before the age of 16. Suryavanshi has now overtaken some major names in world cricket, including Pakistan’s Babar Azam (552 runs), Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto (546), and Ahmed Shehzad (510), all of whom later became senior internationals.

Vaibhav also holds the distinction of being the youngest ever to score a half-century against Australia in a Youth ODI, breaking Hasan Raza’s record by over a year. At just 14 years and 181 days old, he already owns the records for the four youngest half-centuries in Youth ODI history. Moreover, he is the youngest player ever to score a century in this format.

Before Vaibhav’s meteoric rise, Sarfaraz Khan held the Indian record for most Youth ODI runs before turning 16, with 308 runs. Piyush Chawla was the only other Indian 14-year-old to have played at this level.
