Former Indian pacer Varun Aaron has reckoned that India is by far the worst catching team in the last 12 to 18 months in the shortest format of the game, a worrying aspect ahead of the Super 8 round in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.

Shifting our focus to the statistical details, Indian fielders have put down a total of nine catches in four group stage games, the second-most by any team in the ongoing mega event, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Speaking exclusively on ESPNCricinfo, the former pacer revealed that the team’s catching efficiency is less than 70. In the game against the Netherlands, Zach Lion-Cachet got two survivals. While the first one was after a miscommunication between captain Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh, the second was when Tilak Verma spilled a chance in the final over.

"Massive problem. India is by far the worst catching team in the last 12 months or maybe 18 months. Their catching percentage is below 70. Every match they drop at least 2-3 catches. I just hope that they don't drop important catches come the Super 8 and the semifinals," Aaron said on ESPNCricinfo.

Moving into the details of the match, India batted first and posted a daunting total of 193/6 in 20 overs, thanks to Shivam Dube's 66-run knock off 31 balls with four fours and six sixes. In the chase, the Netherlands scored 176/7 in 20 overs, losing the game by 17 runs. Varun Chakravarthy was the wrecker-in-chief with a three-wicket haul in his three-over spell.
