England seamer Brydon Carse, who is all set for his home Test debut, has stated that while Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are massive losses for Team India’s batting line-up, the Indian team has enough depth and quality to put up a strong playing XI for the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, starting on June 20.
Notably, the Shubman Gill-led Indian Test squad is scheduled to take on England in the first Test of the five-match series. With the retirements of Kohli and Rohit, Gill has been appointed as the new Test captain.
“Look, obviously, you know, Virat and Sharma are massive losses for their batting line-up. They’ve been experienced players over a number of years and, you know, world-class batters. But the depth that Indian cricket have and the quality and players coming through, you know, they will, without a doubt, put up a very strong 11 and we’re ready for whatever challenge that brings,” Brydon Carse said in the pre-match press conference on Wednesday.
Furthermore, Carse stated that any quality batter is expected to give his wicket in the first 20 balls as the new cherry is expected to swing a lot in English conditions initially. Moreover, he added that he has plans and processes for all Indian batters.
“Yeah, look, I mean, they’re quality players. Again, you know, depending on what the surface plays like. I think any batter that you’re bowling at, you know, with a new ball or their first 20 balls is susceptible to getting out. So, whenever we have an opportunity at any of their top-order batters, we’ll have plans and processes in place, to obviously knock them over as quick as we can,” he added.
Interestingly, Carse is expected to share the new ball bowling duties along with Chris Woakes, the bowling all-rounder. Woakes, who missed the previous two Tests, is also making his comeback.
“I mean, if that’s the discussion around, you know, this first game, I mean, yeah, of course I’ll relish to put my hand up and take that chance. And just, obviously, we’re in a new cycle now after that World Test championship,” he concluded.
