Virat Kohli “didn’t like” Ambati Rayudu

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa revealed that Virat Kohli was one of the main reasons why Ambati Rayudu couldn't feature in the 2019 World Cup for India. Rayudu had been performing well for India in the lead-up to the World Cup but was snubbed controversially in favor of Vijay Shankar.

Kohli had been pretty vocal in the press conference that Ambati Rayudu would be India's No.4 at the World Cup. However, the musical chairs at the No.4 continued in the World Cup where India were knocked out in the semifinal against New Zealand.

Speaking to Lallantop, UIthappa spoke about how a player would be dropped if he wasn't on good terms with Virat Kohli.

“If he (Virat Kohli) didn't like anyone, he didn't feel someone is good, then they were cut. (Ambati) Rayudu is the prime example. You feel bad. Everybody has preferences, I agree but you cannot close the door on a player after taking him to the cusp. He had World Cup clothes, World Cup kit bag, everything was there at his home. A player would be thinking that he is going to the World Cup. But you shut the door on him. That wasn't fair according to me,” Uthappa revealed on Lallantop.

Ambati Rayudu removed his frustration on Twitter

Ambati Rayudu took to Twitter (now known as X) and claimed that he would watch the World Cup 'with 3D glasses'. This was a jibe at former chief selector MSK Prasad, who had called Vijay Shankar as a 3D player during the announcement of India's ODI World Cup 2019 squad.

Rayudu later revealed in one of the interviews that he and MSK Prasad were not on good terms after the batter was snubbed from the 2019 World Cup squad.

Prasad also later claimed that there were other selectors who made that decision and that the captain also had a role to play. Rayudu retired after the IPL 2023 season, winning a record six IPL titles as a player, level with Rohit Sharma.
