Virat Kohli heaps praise on Shubman Gill after his Edgbaston heroics

The new Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, who scored a double century and a century in the ongoing Birmingham Test against England, has received top praise from the former Indian Test captain Virat Kohli on his Instagram handle.

Interestingly, Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings, and later he followed it up with a 161-run knock in the second innings as Team India set an improbable 608-run target for England in the fourth innings.

Virat Kohli, who announced his retirement from Tests along with his colleague Rohit Sharma, wrote on his Instagram story, “Well played star boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this.”

Gill, with his twin centuries in the Birmingham Test, achieved the second-highest individual aggregate in a single Test with a tally of 430 runs, just falling behind England’s Graham Gooch, who accumulated 456 runs against India at Lord’s in 1990.

Also, Gill became the second batter in Test cricket history to score over 150 runs in both innings of a Test, after Australia’s Allan Border, who accumulated 150 and 153* against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980.

Additionally, Gill also emerged as the third Indian captain to score centuries in both innings of a Test and joined another elite list, becoming the ninth player in Test cricket history to score a double ton and a ton in the same game.

It’s important to note that after declaring the innings at 427/6 in 83 overs, India reached a historic milestone by amassing a total of 1000 runs in a single Test for the first time in the team’s cricketing history, moving past their best of 916 set against Australia at the SCG in Sydney in 2004.
