Sanjay Manjrekar, a renowned commentator and former India cricket player, was the target of yet another vicious attack by Virat Kohli's brother, Vikas Kohli. This comes after Manjrekar bemoaned Virat Kohli's decision to switch from Test cricket to One-Day Internationals.
Manjrekar said that ODIs were the "easiest format" and that he was disappointed that Kohli would only play in the 50-over format. But after Kohli scored another century on Sunday, this time in a losing effort against New Zealand, his brother responded to Manjrekar's prior remarks on social media.
"I wonder if Mr Expert of Cricket has some suggestions for the easiest form of cricket. You need to be there to do that. Anyways, as I said, easier said than done," Vikas Kohli posted on his official Threads account, subtly referring to Manjrekar's statements.
Vikas Kohli has previously criticized Manjrekar's remarks in a post that he wrote a few days prior.
"Such an easy format isn't it ... someone gave his gyaan a few days back... easier said than done...," he had said.
Kohli scored 124 runs off of just 108 balls on Sunday, but top-order batsmen Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer were unable to help India reach a goal of 337. In his nine List A games, it was Kohli's fourth century. Manjrekar had already stated this on Kohli's ODI career.
"Well, as Joe Root attains new heights in Test cricket, my mind goes to Virat Kohli. He's walked away from Tests, and it's unfortunate that in the five years that he struggled before retiring, he didn't quite put his heart and soul into finding out the problems as to why he was averaging 31 for five years in Tests. That is for another time as to what he could have done,” Manjrekar had said in a video on Instagram.
"It was okay, Virat Kohli just walked away from cricket, retired from all cricket. But that he's chosen to play one-day cricket actually disappoints me more, because this is a format which, for a top-order batter, I've said before as well, is the easiest format,” he added.
Virat Kohli will now have a six-month break from international cricket as India shifts focus to T20Is, with the T20 World Cup, New Zealand T20I series and the IPL.
