Less than a week after Rohit Sharma of India declared his intention to retire from Test cricket, Virat Kohli said he would leave the five-day format immediately. As captain, he was a true leader of the team and a force to be reckoned with at bat. Beyond his achievements with the white-ball, Kohli is perhaps one of the greatest of all time.
His records and achievements speak a lot about his impact on Indian and World Cricket. Let’s take a look at some of his records and achievements in the red-ball game.
Kohli led India to victory in just 17 Test matches while captaining the team in 68, the most of any Indian. He is the most successful Test captain in Indian history with 40 victories and 11 draws, a stellar win percentage of 58.82%. He tied Ricky Ponting's record by leading India to nine straight Test series wins between 2015 and 2017.
Notably, in the 2018–19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Kohli guided India to their first-ever Test series triumph on Australian soil. In addition, the Kohli-led Indian team advanced to the final of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and maintained the top rank on the ICC Test Team Rankings for five consecutive years, from 2016 to 2021.
With 9,230 runs in 123 Test matches, Kohli is now India's fourth-highest run scorer, behind only fellow Indian all-time greats Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, and Sachin Tendulkar. With 30 centuries in his total, he once again ranks fourth among Indians and 16th overall.
With six of them coming as captain (the highest ever), Kohli also holds the record for the most double hundreds (seven) by an Indian in Test cricket. Along with having the most hundreds as an Indian captain (20), Kohli holds the record for the highest score by an Indian captain in Test matches, 254* against South Africa (2019).
