Head coach Gautam Gambhir lavished praise on Team India opener Rohit Sharma following the team's nine-wicket victory over Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 25, in the third ODI. For his outstanding hitting performances during the three-match series, the seasoned batsman was also awarded a special dressing room medal.
Australia won the first two ODIs to secure the series. In the third match, India managed to recover some prestige with a consolation victory. Sharma scored his 33rd century in the format, shining with the bat.
Despite Matt Renshaw's 56, Australia was bowled out for 236 runs as Harshit Rana destroyed their batting, recording 4/39. Shubman Gill responded by scoring 69 runs for the first wicket before falling for 24.
However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the two most seasoned Indian batsmen, scored 168* runs for the second wicket to help India over the finish line. Rohit Sharma stole the show with 121* with 13 fours and 3 sixes, his 33rd ODI century, while Virat Kohli scored 74* with 7 fours.
Both Player of the Match and Player of the Series went to Rohit Sharma.
“Outstanding”- Gautam Gambhir praises Rohit Sharma for his SCG hundred
Gautam Gambhir addressed the Indian contingent in the SCG dressing room and praised all the main performers of the win over Australia. He had a special mention to Rohit Sharma, who scored his 33rd century and became the first Indian batter to score 1000 runs in ODIs in Australia.
"With the bat, I thought the partnership between Shubman and Rohit, it was very, very important, where we were 60 for no loss. And then, the partnership between Rohit and Virat was again outstanding, very clinical as well. And a special mention to Rohit, another hundred, outstanding. The most important thing was that you finished it off, and Virat as well,” Gambhir said in a video shared by BCCI.
The 38-year-old received the 'Impact Player of the Series' dressing room medal from strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux for his performances.
