Daren Sammy, West Indies head coach, has made a plea as the entire Caribbean contingent is still stuck in India despite their exit from the T20 World Cup 2026. This is due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and USA & Israel, which is affecting the Gulf as well.

Zimbabwe has also been affected similarly, underlining that this was a wider aviation disruption rather than an isolated team logistics issue. Both of these teams need to return home via Dubai, but the airspace has been closed as Iran has bombed the US airbases in UAE, Qatar, and other Gulf countries.

The disturbance was prompted by a rising security situation related to the Gulf conflict. Airspace closures and restrictions caused by military action and security threats in the West Asia/Gulf air corridors forced airlines to suspend, divert, and delay services on popular international transit routes.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) stated in an official statement that the senior men's team's departure from India had been delayed due to international airspace constraints following their withdrawal from the T20 World Cup.

The board also stated that the players, coaches, and officials were safe and were being accommodated in India while fresh travel plans were being finalized.

Daren Sammy posts on social media as West Indies remains in India

Daren Sammy's four-word statement reverberated far beyond the West Indies fan base. The West Indies head coach's message came after his team's return from India following the T20 World Cup 2026 was postponed, making what should have been a simple departure into an anxious wait.

That post read like a fatigued reaction to being eliminated from the competition and facing travel uncertainty. And in this case, the background is very real: West Indies flights were unable to depart on time due to international airspace restrictions affecting vital routes out of the region.

Sammy posted: “I just wanna go home.

For the West Indies, the timing exacerbated an already depressing finale to the campaign. After arriving with high hopes for a greater push, they were left coping not only with elimination but also with the uncertainty of when they would be able to return, a circumstance that can mentally exhaust players and support personnel after a lengthy tournament cycle.

According to CWI's statement, the board is working with the ICC and other necessary authorities to finalize new arrangements, and safe travel continues to be the top concern. Up to that point, Sammy's piece remains the most straightforward depiction of the circumstances: a team prepared to depart but rooted in a problem far more significant than cricket.
