The International Cricket Council (ICC) has handed the West Indies pacer Jayden Seales a fine of 25 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct on Day 1 of the ongoing second and final Test vs India in Delhi on Friday, October 10.
For the unversed, Seales was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
The ICC official media release has stated that one demerit point has been added to the pacer’s disciplinary record as his total points have been increased to two in 24 months. He received his previous demerit point in a Test match against Bangladesh in December 2024.
It’s worth noting that the Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
Delving into the details of the incident, in the 29th over of India’s first innings on the opening day of the second Test, West Indies pacer Seales fielded the ball on his follow-through and immediately threw it back at the Indian opener Jaiswal, hitting him on his pads.
Though Seales contested that he was attempting a run-out, the Match Referee, Andy Pycroft, replayed clips showing the incident from different angles and concluded that the throw was unnecessary and inappropriate, hitting the batter on the pads when he was within the crease.
On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Alex Wharf, and fourth umpire K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan levelled the charge on Seales.
