What is Vignesh Puthur's IPL 2025 salary?

When the IPL was introduced to Indian cricket in 2008, its primary aim was to discover and nurture young talent, providing them with a platform to showcase their potential against the world's best cricketers. 

Over the years, various franchises have unearthed exciting prospects, with Mumbai Indians (MI) leading the way in developing future stars. Players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, who are now household names in Indian cricket, first made their mark through MI.

In IPL 2025, MI may have lost their season opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai, but they introduced the world to a new rising talent—24-year-old left-arm spinner Vignesh Puthur from Kerala. Despite having never played a single T20 match before, MI took a gamble by backing him as an impact player in place of Rohit Sharma. 

Vignesh justified their faith, making an immediate impact by dismissing CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda. However, the big question after the game was—how did MI discover him?

Vignesh Puthur’s IPL 2025 salary

It was revealed that MI first spotted Vignesh during the Kerala Cricket League. He then attended trials for the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, where his talent caught their attention. MI ultimately secured him for ₹30 lakh. 

Additionally, before the tournament, MI sent him to South Africa for the third edition of the SA20, where he worked as a net bowler for MI Cape Town. There, he trained alongside Rashid Khan, one of the finest wrist-spinners in T20 cricket.

Speaking about Vignesh in the post-match press conference, MI’s bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, explained what the team saw in him. “When we saw him in one of our trials, we focused on his potential rather than his experience. He spins the ball consistently, lands it exactly where we want, and is very accurate. Those are key qualities we look for. But more than that, he is different—he spins the ball, has a good googly, and possesses the skills to trouble top-quality batters.”

Mhambrey also praised Vignesh’s temperament on debut, especially in such a high-pressure game against CSK. “It is never easy—your first game, against CSK, in a big match. But the way he responded, hats off to him. He held his nerves and handled the pressure superbly. He really brought us back into the game, and we are very happy with his performance.”
