Who is Ayush Mhatre? All you need to know about CSK opener

IPL 2025 has given youngsters to talk about, with Suryavanshi being the youngest and the most talked about, but the Chennai batter is not too far behind. For 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre, Sunday night's Indian Premier League match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium was a homecoming. 

Before falling to Deepak Chahar, he scored a scorching 32 runs off 15 balls in his maiden match against the Mumbai Indians. After being selected for the playing XI by CSK in place of Rahul Tripathi, the adolescent who was brought in as a late injury substitute for Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, was back at his old haunting grounds.

With a brilliant 94 off just 48 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday, May 3, 17-year-old Mhatre almost stole the show. Chennai head coach Stephen Fleming praised the young opener's blistering knock, although he missed out on a century.

Mumbai is the birthplace of Ayush Mhatre. He is a 17-year-old boy who competes in the Indian domestic circuit for the Mumbai Team. He bats right-handed and occasionally off-spins with his right arm.

To date, he has participated in seven List A games and nine First-Class (FC) games for Mumbai. Throughout his FC career, he has amassed 504 runs at an average of 31.50, with two hundreds and one half-century. The right-handed batsman has hammered 458 runs at a batting average of 65.42 during his List A career.

At last November's IPL 2025 super auction in Jeddah, the Mumbai player was not sold. But later, earlier this month, at mid-season trials at Chepauk, he attracted the eye of CSK talent scouts. 

Mhatre's batting form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024–25 was flawless. With 458 runs, he finished the tournament as Mumbai's top scorer. In a match against Nagaland, he crushed an incredible 181 and claimed seven wickets in four tournament games while bowling off-spin.
