Who is Mitchell Owen? All you need to know about Hobart Hurricanes star batter

Mitchell Owen was the star for Hobart Hurricanes in the final of the Big Bash League (BBL) against Sydney Thunder. He smashed the joint-fastest century in the history of the tournament notching up his ton in just 39 balls. 

Thanks to his ton, the Hurricanes won the BBL for the first time in 14 years chasing down 183 runs in just 14.1 overs with seven wickets in hand. This is also the fastest century by a batter in the final of a T20 tournament in Men’s cricket.

Mitchell Owen was born on September 16 in 2001 and made his T20 debut in January 2021 during the BBL 2020-21 season. But he was majorly a batting all-rounder and used to bat lower down the order and hence, got limited opportunities.

He has played for Hobart Hurricanes only since making his debut but had played only 13 matches across four seasons before the BBL 2024-25 edition. In 13 matches before, he had mustered only 79 runs with a best score of 28 and had picked up three wickets.

However, the recently concluded BBL season turned things around for him as the Hurricanes promoted Owen to open the innings. He amassed 452 runs at an average of 45.2 and a strike rate of 203.6 with two centuries to his name. Owen also picked up three wickets and the 23-year-old has been the toast of the nation ever since his heroics.

He has so far played 12 first-class and 15 List-A matches in his career scoring 521 and 129 runs respectively. After looking at his heroics at the top of the order, his promotion in the One-Day format cannot be ruled out for next season. 

Notably, the 23-year-old had also registered in the IPL 2025 auction but didn’t make it to the shortlist. After a blockbuster BBL season, the IPL franchise may look at him as one of the potential replacements if any of their players get injured.

Meanwhile, Owen will be hoping that he continues to keep the form going in the next domestic season as well in order to make it to the national team.
