Why are Indian women’s cricketers wearing pink jersey against Australia in the third ODI?

The Indian women’s team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, is all set to sport a special pink jersey in their third and final ODI against Australia in the series decider at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, September 20.

For the unversed, this special pink kit is aimed at promoting breast cancer awareness. Moreover, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed in a video on their social platforms on Saturday morning.

“Everyday we train for uncertainties, and this jersey is a reminder for you to be prepared. Let’s make breast self-examination a monthly routine and take a stand against breast cancer,” the Indian captain Harmanpreet said in the video message.

“This pink jersey is more than just a symbol. It is a call to build a life-saving habit. Together, let’s fight against breast cancer and give ourselves a hug of life,” the Indian all-rounder Sneh Rana stated in the same video.

It’s important to note that the Indian men’s team, led by MS Dhoni, wore special jerseys having their mothers’ names on their back way back in 2016 during an ODI against New Zealand in Vishakapatnam.

Later in 2019, Indian team sported camouflage caps in an ODI against Australia to honour the soldiers who died in the Pulwama terrorist attack.
