Why will Lord's lose Rs. 45 crore during the WTC 2025 Final?

The final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 is set to take place from June 11 to 15 at Lord’s, where Australia will face South Africa. This time, Team India has failed to qualify for the final after poor performances in their last two Test series.

First, they were whitewashed 3-0 at home by New Zealand. Then, they suffered a 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. These results meant India could not reach the final. According to The Times, Lord’s is expected to lose Rs. 45 crore in ticket revenue due to India’s absence from the WTC final.

India is one of the most popular cricket teams in the world, and their matches, especially in ICC events, attract large crowds of Indian fans. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) had originally set ticket prices at premium rates, expecting India to qualify.

However, after India failed to make it to the final, MCC had to lower ticket prices to fill more seats rather than have a half-empty stadium with expensive tickets. The report mentioned that tickets for the Australia vs. South Africa final are now priced between £40 and £90 (Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 10,100). This is around £50 cheaper than the original price.

“We have an opportunity to do something special for the country.” - Temba Bavuma

This also highlights the importance of Team India and its fans, as they play a crucial role in modern cricket. Their presence significantly impacts ticket sales and revenue generation for major events.

In this WTC cycle, South Africa finished at the top with a 69.44 percentile after winning eight matches, losing three, and drawing one out of 12 games. Australia came second with a 67.54 percentile, securing 13 wins, four losses, and two draws in 19 matches. This will be South Africa’s first WTC final, while Australia has already won the title once.

With both teams in strong form, an exciting contest awaits cricket fans on June 11, 2025. Australia is on a mission to defend the title, while the Proteas will look to write history by bagging their maiden title.

South Africa skipper, while speaking to reporters, Temba Bavuma, has said: “We have an opportunity to do something special for the country. One thing I know is with that group of players, everyone will try and run through a brick wall to make sure we get on the right side of that result.”
