The upcoming five-match Test series between India and England has been renamed to the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, which is scheduled to take place from June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
Since 2007, the series has been known to be called as ‘Pataudi Trophy’ under the names of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and his father Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, Team India’s two former captains.
However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to change the name of the series, involving the legendary Indian and England cricketers - Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson.
Interestingly, Sachin went on to request the ECB and BCCI to preserve the Pataudi heritage. Moreover, the Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle also joined the queue, stating that history shouldn’t be sacrificed in the name of immediacy.
"I very much like the idea of Pataudi trophies because it was a link between our countries. Pataudi Sr played Test cricket for India and England, he captained India on the 46 tour of England. Junior Tiger went to school, was an astounding school cricketer ..all kinds of records, played at Sussex, had strong linkages there.. but was a proud and loyal captain of India.. so I think the link between the two countries are strong ..sometimes in the need of immediacy we sacrifice history ..I thought it was a very good name. But now that you've done it, will the series be called Kohli-Root trophy 10 years from now?" Bhogle told NDTV.
It’s important to note that in March 2025, the ECB wrote to the Pataudi family about their decision to retire the Pataudi trophy. While Sachin Tendulkar is the leading run-scorer in Test cricket history with 15921 runs, Anderson is the leading wicket-taker among pacers with 704 Test wickets.
Notably, England are the reigning champions of the Pataudi Trophy after retaining the silverware with a 2-2 draw in the Test series between 2021 and 2022.
