“Under him, I became a better bowler”- Yuzvendra Chahal praises Sanju Samson’s captaincy for RR

Yuzvendra Chahal, India’s T20 World Cup winning spinner, has praised credited ex-Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson for making him a better bowler. The Punjab Kings spinner praised Samson in a recent interview for turning his IPL career around by forcing him to bowl at the death. 

In line with Yuzvendra Chahal's assertions, the ace Indian spinner had a successful three-year career with the Rajasthan Royals between 2022 and 2024.

Yuzvendra Chahal gave former Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson high marks in an open interview on Mashable India. Chahal claims that Samson was among the first captains in IPL history to employ spinners during the slog overs. 

Yuzvendra Chahal, the top spinner for the Rajasthan Royals at the time, was often used at the time, which paid off handsomely for both the team and the great Indian spinner.

The 35-year-old continued by saying that he improved at death bowling over time and took many wickets while playing for the Rajasthan Royals for three years under Sanju Samson's guidance. 

“Sanju Samson is amazing. Under him I became a better bowler. Till then no captains used to bowl spinners in the death. Sanju made me a death over bowler and I had the most wickets in the death overs. He won't disturb you and allow you to bowl as you like,” Chahal told Mashable India.

Yuzvendra Chahal took 66 wickets for the Rajasthan Royals throughout the 2022 and 2024 IPL seasons, including 27 in just 17 innings of IPL 2022. He is also the IPL's all-time highest wicket-taker with 221 scalps.

Yuzvendra Chahal had been excellent as he took a hat-trick and a fifer in the same match for Rajasthan Royals during his tenure. 

Since then, Chahal and Sanju Samson have split up to play for different teams in the 2026 Indian Premier League. Samson acquired a new IPL base with Chennai Super Kings, but the senior Indian spinner will play again for the Punjab Kings this season.
