After Big Hits, Malayalam Cinema Suffers Rs 700 Crore Loss in 2024

For the film industry, 2024 has been a rather surprising year. Superstars or large-budget films with huge stars didn't do well at the box office. Bollywood suffered significant losses, but Malayalam cinema thrived with several successful films. The Kerala Film Producers' Association, however, presented a somewhat different image.

The Kerala Film Producers Association announced in a statement that the film business lost 700 crore in 2024. Only Rs 300 crore of the Rs 1000 crore production costs that were incurred this year were recovered. Only 26 of the 199 Malayalam films released this year were successful. The producers think that the nearly Rs 700 crore in unrecovered funds is partly a result of rising film production costs, particularly those associated with actor salaries.

Mollywood in crisis:

According to the statement, the money was not recovered because both the performers' pay and the production costs of movies increased significantly. While several films, such as Varshangalkku Sesham, Kishkinda Kaandam, and Guruvayur Ambalanadayil, scored well at the box office and broke into the Rs 50 crore club, they did not contribute to the overall recovery. Re-releases such as Manichitrathazhu and Devadoothan did better, according to the statement.

Despite the excitement and anticipation, Mohanlal's first film as director, Barroz, did not do well at the box office. The Kerala Film Producers' Association hopes that 2024 will teach viewers to visit theatres in droves. The popularity of small-scale films and the year's events demonstrated that while style is not important to the public, content is. Since the business lacks the market of its neighbouring industries, it is really stated that producing 200 films per year is not something that would be sustainable over the long term.
