Even though 2025 is just getting started, the lineup of anticipated science fiction films for the year already seems packed. There are a number of new titles that we have been eagerly awaiting, some of which were postponed from the previous year, and 2025 will be the year that they finally appear on our screens.
Despite the fact that this year is a historic one for returning franchises, the great majority of the films on the list below are completely new to the sci-fi film genre. There are a ton of possible additions to our list of the greatest science fiction films ever made when we look at the roster for 2025. Many of the films on this list will debut straight on streaming services, but the majority will first be seen in theatres.
Must Watch Sci-Fi Movies Releasing in 2025:
1. Star Trek: Section 31:
- Release Date: January 24 2025
- Cast: Michelle Yeoh, Kacey Rohl, Omari Hardwick, Robert Kazinsky
Michelle Yeoh returns to her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery in this Paramount Plus original, joining a covert branch of Starfleet and returning to the action.
2. Mickey 17:
- Release date: Mar 7, 2025
- Cast: Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo
The main character, played by Robert Pattinson, is an employee who embarks on a mission to populate the ice planet Niflheim. Mickey7 is well-suited for this perilous task because he has the ability to regenerate regardless of how many times he dies.
3. The Electric State:
- Release date: March 14, 2024
- Cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Michelle Yeoh, Stanley Tucci
The Electric State, a movie based on Simon Stålenhag's graphic novel of the same name, marks Netflix's return to the sci-fi genre. An orphaned teen makes friends with a curious robot and a nomad who is looking for her younger brother as the journey progresses.
4. Thunderbolts:
- Release Date: May 2, 2025
- Cast: Florence Pugh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Rachel Weisz
A team of supervillains working for the government is preferable to just one villain from the MCU. The Thunderbolts* are a group of reformed (ostensibly) antiheroes who are brought in to defend the globe. In essence, Thunderbolts is Marvel's response to Suicide Squad from DC.
3. Elio:
- Release Date: June 13, 2025
- Cast: Yonas Kibreab, America Ferrera, Jameela Jamil, Brad Garrett
Sci-fi is nothing new to Pixar. With successful films like Robots, Elemental, WALL-E, Onward, and Lightyear already under their belt, their next film, Elio, is eagerly awaited.
