Ajit Agarkar explains the need for new rules

Team India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar shed light on the importance of having certain rules in place for the players from the BCCI. In the aftermath of India's disastrous 3-1 defeat against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, the BCCI came up with a 10-point diktat that had a number of guidelines that the players needed to adhere to.

The wives and girlfriends of the players wouldn't be able to accompany the players for more than two weeks for a tour that lasted 45 days. The players would also need to travel to practice sessions and matches together on the team bus. All these measures are taken to foster discipline and unity in the team.

While there have been mixed reactions to the diktat on social media, Ajit Agarkar explained the importance of the rules and the players adhering to them.

"I think every team has some rules in place. We have spoken about various things. We have seen in the last few months the need for some changes, more bonding in the team. It's not a school, it's not a punishment. We have some rules and when you are playing for the national team, you following the rules,” Agarkar said in a press conference.

These are not school kids, these are superstars: Ajit Agarkar

Ajit Agarkar stressed that the guidelines put forward by the BCCI were not to punish or be strict towards the players. He refused to accept that it was a diktat and claimed that those were just guidelines put forward by the BCCI.

"These are not school kids. These are superstars. They know how to handle themselves. But, at the end of the day, you play for your country. So you need to follow some rules. There were a lot of rules that were in place. You keep on refining it," he added.
