The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated the Mumbai Indians (MI) in their IPL 2025 opening game at Chepauk. But Vignesh Puthur, a new star, came out of the game. Everyone was impressed by the spell of the 24-year-old Keralan left-arm wrist spinner, who was playing in the IPL for the first time. Puthur took three wickets in the match, his first time playing T20 at the senior level.
Puthur, a left-arm wrist spinner from Malappuram, Kerala, shook up CSK's middle order and emerged as MI's most influential bowler in their thrilling opening match, but he was unable to stop the team from losing by a slim margin. Despite being Mumbai's Impact Player, Puthur's performance was far from that of a rookie.
Vignesh Puthur's Incredible Journey:
Puthur was born and raised in a middle-class household in Perinthalmanna, Kerala, where his father, Sunil, gave up a lot to help his son pursue his dream of playing cricket. To make sure Vignesh could consistently attend cricket training, Sunil, who had previously operated an agency for a cookie brand, changed to operating an auto-rickshaw. When Vignesh entered the Perinthalmanna Cricket Academy, his efforts paid off, as coach C.G. Vijayakumar saw right away how well the young player could spin the ball.
MI's scouts noticed something unique in him despite his lackluster Kerala Cricket League performance, which included only two wickets in three games. At the IPL 2025 mega-auction, the team decided to take a chance and bought him for ₹30 lakh.
Puthur had an outstanding debut for the Mumbai team, dismissing CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad just after he turned fifty. He then quickly removed Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda. Despite MI's failure to win, Vignesh's performance became the match's most talked-about topic. After the game, even MS Dhoni gave him a shoulder pat. Vignesh is another intriguing addition to MI's roster, which is known for identifying up-and-coming talent.
