Shreyas Iyer was recently named the new captain of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) franchise for IPL 2025, making him the 17th captain of the side in their history in the Indian Premier League.

This led to a very interesting discussion on social media as to which franchise in IPL history has had the most captains in the tournament. Punjab Kings easily made the top of the list with 17 captains, including Iyer.

Their first captain was Yuvraj Singh, who was also the icon player for the Punjab franchise. However, PBKS has changed captaincy the most, with Yuvraj captaining the most 29 matches. Only Adam Gilchrist, George Bailey, R. Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, and KL Rahul have captained PBKS in multiple seasons.

On the second number comes Delhi Capitals with 13 captains, with Virender Sehwag leading the side from 2008-2012 in 52 matches. Rishabh Pant has then led the side in 43 matches, and Shreyas Iyer captained the Delhi franchise in 41 games. Other notable DC captains have been Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan, and David Warner.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have had 10 captains, with David Warner being the most prolific one with 67 matches as skipper. He also won SRH the IPL in the 2016 edition. Second comes Kane Williamson, who captained 46 matches, while Pat Cummins has led in 16 matches.

Mumbai Indians, the five-time IPL champions, have had 9 captains since IPL 2008. Rohit Sharma has captained them most in 158 games from 2013-2023. Sachin Tendulkar has captained MI in 51 games, while Harbhajan Singh captained Mumbai Indians in 20 matches.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, who have won the IPL 3 times, have had 7 captains each in IPL history. For RCB, Virat Kohli has led them in 143 games, while Faf du Plessis captained the side in 42 matches. KKR has been captained the most by Gautam Gambhir in 108 matches, while Dinesh Karthik comes second with captaining the side in 37 games.

2008 IPL champions Rajasthan Royals have had 6 captains, with Sanju Samson having led in 61 matches, Shane Warne leading in 55 games, and Rahul Dravid captaining the side in 34 matches.

The other five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, have had only four captains, with MS Dhoni leading in 212 games. Ruturaj Gaikwad led in IPL 2024, and Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja are the other notable names to lead CSK.

The two new franchises, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, both have had 3 captains each. Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill for GT and KL Rahul for LSG have been the longest-serving captains for either franchise.
