Mumbai Indians is the joint-most successful franchise in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL) having won the trophy a staggering five times, all under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. However, as many as nine players have led MI in IPL and the first-ever cricketer to lead them was Harbhajan Singh.
Sachin Tendulkar was named the captain in the inaugural edition but he got injured just before the tournament got underway. Harbhajan not only led them in the first season, he also stepped up later whenever needed leading them in as many as 30 matches. Mumbai Indians won and lost 14 matches each while a couple of games didn’t yield a result.
Shaun Pollock was also appointed the team’s captain in 2008 when Harbhajan Singh was banned for slapping Sreesanth of Kings XI Punjab in anger. Pollock led MI in four matches, winning three and losing only one.
Legendary Sachin Tendulkar led the team in 55 matches overall in IPL and boasts of a winning percentage of 58.18 with 32 wins. Rohit Sharma was the fifth captain of the team taking over midway of the 2013 edition and the rest is history.
He not only led the team to five titles, Rohit led Mumbai Indians in 163 matches winning 91 and losing 68 of them. He remains the most successful captain in IPL history alongside MS Dhoni as both players have won five titles for their respective teams.
Hardik Pandya is their current captain having led them in the 2024 edition as well and is set to take the field in the same capacity in IPL 2025 too. However, his record at the helm for the five-time champions isn’t great having won only four out of 14 matches so far.
Dwayne Bravo, Ricky Ponting, Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav are the other four players who have stepped up when needed to lead the franchise.
