3 Challenges awaiting India’s next chief selector

Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as the chief of the BCCI men’s cricket team selection committee ended on October 4. Agarkar had a successful tenure where India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2026 T20 World Cup, the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, and two Asia Cups in 2023 and 2025.

Now that the BCCI will be looking out for a new candidate to take over Agarkar’s spot, the new chief selector’s job will be cut out for him. He will have to do better than Agarkar, under whom India have become a force to reckon with in white-ball cricket. Today, we check out three challenges that the new chief selector of India will face.

Here are the 3 challenges awaiting India’s next chief selector:

3. Building a settled squad for the 2027 ICC World Cup

Ajit Agarkar has laid down the groundwork for the Indian team for the ICC World Cup 2027, and the new chief selector will have built on the same plans. The middle-order combination, dependable backup options, and questions about older players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will need to be carefully considered. The new chief selector’s job will be to balance the youth with experience and build a squad that will bring the World Cup trophy home.

2. Manage generational transition in ODIs

Indian cricket is undergoing a huge transition, and much of its effect will happen in ODI format. The Test team is looking settled under Shubman Gill, while the T20I squad is a ground for experimentation. However, after the 2027 World Cup, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will bid goodbye to the ODI format. Even there will be some bowlers who will need to be phased out, and the new chief selector will need to ensure all this happens smoothly without any big issue.

1. Strengthen pace attack and keep good relations with BCCI.

India’s fast-bowling resources will require careful consideration, especially when key players’ availability is impacted by injury and workload management. In addition to ensuring that young local bowlers are given the chance to establish themselves, the future top selector must create reliable backup options around Jasprit Bumrah. One of the biggest challenges for the chief selector will be to ensure that captains have the best players for any series across formats.
