“Depends on how Shubman uses them” - Bowling coach on India’s spin attack ahead of Test series vs Sri Lanka

Team India bowling coach Morne Morkel, who attended the pre-series press conference in Galle, has opened up on India’s spin attack ahead of the two-Test tour against Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to start on Saturday, August 15, in Galle.

Speaking at the press conference, Morkel has stated that the Indian Test side has three quality left-arm spinners, who are completely different from each other, adding that it would be interesting to see how the skipper Shubman Gill uses them.

“Kuldeep is an attacking spinner, Jadeja has class and experience. Our three left-arm spinners are different. They have the skill. Depends on how Shubman uses them,” Morne Morkel said during the pre-series press conference.

Furthermore, Morkel has also shared his views on the Galle surface, stating that it would be a sporting wicket, supporting both batters and bowlers. However, he reckoned that batters will have their fair share in the first innings.

“Looks a good surface, can use spin as an attacking option with pace from the other end. It’s all about mindset and as the match will go on, there will be ups and downs; uneven bounce,” Morkel said of the pitch.

“The ball will go soft after 20-25 overs. Need to be smart – use the crease, short ball and execute the plans. Surface looks good to the eye, and first innings could belong to the batters. Bat big,” he added.

India’s updated squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka: Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, Sarfaraz Khan
