Former Indian off-spinner and commentator Harbhajan Singh has come out in strong support of the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has been under extreme pressure for his poor red-ball numbers as a coach.
Speaking in an interview with Sports Now Hindi, Bhajji has defended Gambhir, stating that when the team doesn’t perform well, things suddenly come on the coach, which shouldn’t be the case. He went on to add that Gambhir always puts the team first.
“Why? Why is he getting that? I do not understand. When someone becomes a coach, if the team does not do well, things suddenly come on the coach. As far as I know him, he was a very passionate player in his time. He is someone who always put the team first,” Harbhajan Singh said in an interview with Sports Now Hindi.
Furthermore, the former Indian spinner has revealed that Gambhir is a man who always speaks from his heart, which many people in the cricketing fraternity don’t like. He went on to back Gambhir, asserting that he knows how the game should be played.
“He is a great guy, and whatever is in his heart is on his lips. Many people think he talks bitterly, but he talks the truth, and people do not like it. By his way of talking, people may think he is like this, but don’t judge a book by its cover. He is a brilliant guy who has a good sense of how the game should be played. I am sure that, even as a coach, he would only be telling the team to play to win,” he added.
Under Gambhir, India suffered two consecutive Test whitewashes at home to South Africa in 2025 and New Zealand in 2024. India will lock horns with Sri Lanka in the two-Test tour, starting on Saturday, August 15, in Galle.
