On Tuesday, September 1, the BCCI revealed India’s 15-man team for the T20I series against Afghanistan. The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi will host the three-game series from September 13 to September 17.
Tilak Varma will act as vice-captain, while Shreyas Iyer will lead the side. After missing the Zimbabwe series, Sanju Samson has also returned. Jasprit Bumrah has also been included, though his participation is still pending fitness approval.
Today we will see which players from IPL franchises have been chosen in the India squad for the Afghanistan T20Is.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy
Sunrisers Hyderabad have three players in the India squad in the opener: Abhishek Sharma, keeper-batter Ishan Kishan and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. While Sharma and Kishan had played for India in the Ireland, England and Zimbabwe T20Is, Nitish Reddy had been recuperating from his hamstring tear injury, and his inclusion is subject to fitness.
Rajasthan Royals: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ravi Bishnoi
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ravi Bishnoi from Rajasthan Royals have been included in the India squad for the Afghanistan series. Sooryavanshi made his India debut in England T20Is, enduring a tough time, but made his mark against Zimbabwe, winning the Player of the Series award. Ravi Bishnoi earned his recall in the T20I series recently, as management thought they needed a wrist-spin option.
Mumbai Indians: Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah
Tilak Varma, the vice-captain of the Indian team, and Jasprit Bumrah, the ace pacer, will be MI’s representatives in the Indian squad for the Afghanistan T20Is. Varma struggled a bit in recent T20Is in Ireland and England but showed some form in Zimbabwe. Batting in Delhi against Afghanistan will be a positive for Tilak. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah is returning to India colours after hurting his knee in the final ODI in England. It remains to be seen how much workload the pacer will have on his comeback.
Punjab Kings: Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh
India captain Shreyas Iyer and pacer Arshdeep Singh from Punjab Kings were also named in the Indian squad for the Afghanistan T20Is. Iyer had a tough start as India’s T20I captain. Iyer has scored well despite struggling as captain. Arshdeep Singh needs to work more on his economy rate with the ball, as he struggled in friendly conditions in the UK.
Gujarat Titans: Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar of Gujarat Titans has been named in the India squad as well. Sundar had also suffered a hamstring injury in England and was ruled out of subsequent encounters. He has spent a lot of time at the BCCI CoE working on his fitness, given how many times he has broken down.
Delhi Capitals: Axar Patel
Axar Patel, the ex-India vice-captain in T20Is, will represent Delhi Capitals in the Indian squad for Afghanistan T20Is. Axar Patel has been excellent with the ball and bat in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 win. But saw a dip in his form in both disciplines in T20Is in the UK and Zimbabwe.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana
KKR players Varun Chakaravarthy and Harshit Rana will be returning from their respective injuries. Chakaravarthy suffered a hamstring injury and hairline fracture during IPL 2026, while Rana had suffered a knee injury just before the T20 World Cup 2026. Both missed subsequent games as they recovered at the COE and underwent rigorous rehab treatments.
Chennai Super Kings: Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube
Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube will be CSK representatives in the India squad. Samson was not picked for Zimbabwe T20Is and had a poor time in T20Is against Ireland and England, getting dropped after three matches for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. It will be hard for him to find a place in India, Xi. Shivam Dube also looked out of form in the UK and Zimbabwe but will be trusted to do well against Afghanistan.
