Former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has showered praise on the Indian batters for their explosive intent in the 406-run chase in the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 30.
Speaking exclusively to Cricbuzz, Rahane also felt bad for bowlers from both sides as a total of 811 runs were scored in 93.3 overs, including five centurions. However, he reserved special praise for the Indian batters.
“After watching them, I felt that they would have chased down even 450-500, we were talking about it. Yes, the wicket was flat, but it was still brilliant to see. The way they batted, I feel for the bowlers. We are happy that the Indian team has won, but I feel bad for the bowlers from both teams. On such pitches, the margin of error, what to bowl, you don’t know. At the end of the day, whatever you do, the way the Indian batters played, really tough for the bowlers,” Ajinkya Rahane said on Cricbuzz.
Indian skipper Shubman Gill put up a historic performance by scoring an unbeaten 223 runs off just 133 balls to lead India to a massive 406-run chase. In the process, he scored the fastest double century in ODI history, reaching the 200-run mark in only 117 balls.
Further, Gill became only the second batter to record multiple ODI double centuries, after Rohit Sharma. His unbeaten 223 also set the world record for the highest individual score in a successful ODI run-chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s previous record of 201 not out.
Delving into the details of the game, West Indies was tasked with batting first, and they posted a whopping total of 405/7 in 50 overs. In the chase, India crossed the finish line in 43.3 overs with eight wickets in hand. India will lock horns with the West Indies in the third and final ODI in Mullanpur on Saturday, October 3.
