Former Indian keeper-batter and commentator Deep Dasgupta has backed Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s case, as the 15-year-old batter managed to get only two games out of five T20Is against New Zealand.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Dasgupta asserted that India’s first-choice opening pair Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma get to play only one format and losing a T20I fixture could tend to them losing their form.
“Where will Abhishek and Sanju play international cricket after this? They play just one format. They also need match time. So, that becomes an issue. You can give them rest, but you don’t want Abhishek or Sanju, your first-choice opening pair, to lose their form,” Deep Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel.
Further, Dasgupta is confident of Gambhir having a proper conversation with Sooryavanshi in terms of his long-term plans, making the young batter understand his perspective. On the other hand, Sooryavanshi will be next seen playing for India A in the ACC Rising Stars Asia Cup 2026 campaign, commencing on November 19, in Doha.
“Looking at Vaibhav’s perspective, it’s a good initiation that you are getting a chance to open or bat in the top three, you are with the team, and getting to learn. A very important thing here is the conversation with the coach. I’m sure Gautam will have a long-term plan for someone like Vaibhav, and I’m sure it would have been communicated to Vaibhav,” he added.
