BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, on Thursday, September 3, clarified the rumours surrounding the veteran Indian opener Rohit Sharma’s international future. Notably, there were a lot of rumours that Rohit would retire before the mega event next year.
The ICC ODI World Cup 2027 is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia next year. Saikia’s comments came after the review meeting, which was attended by captains Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI CoE head VVS Laxman.
“He is playing superbly in all matches. So, what more do you want? In the last match, he scored 138 runs. So, why is there speculation? So, I don’t want to give fodder to the speculation,” Saikia told reporters.
Further, Saikia revealed that no individual players were discussed at the review meeting, adding that the meeting agenda was around general policies, protocols and players’ fitness levels being some of the important points.
“There was no discussion on any individual player today. This discussion was totally general in nature, and what policy and what protocols we have to maintain regarding maintaining the fitness level of every player, not any individual, and what is in the best interest of the team, we have considered that only. We have taken the feedback from the captains and the head coach, who are the right persons to give us the information so that we chalk up a proper strategy to avoid all these kinds of unwanted situations during any international or bilateral meetings,” he added.
India’s next international assignment is against Afghanistan in a three-match T20 series, starting on Sunday, September 13 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
