Najmul Islam, the chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) financial committee, was fired on Thursday, January 15, after senior national team players rebelled against him for disparaging them. The controversy began when Najmul denied worries over players' compensation in the event that Bangladesh withdraws from the 2026 T20 World Cup while restating the country's unwillingness to travel to India.
Following an urgent online meeting, the BCB confirmed the decision in an official statement. The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) called for a statewide boycott of domestic cricket as part of the strong protest from the cricket community. The BCB said in a statement that the decision was made to ensure the smooth operation of the organisation.

The BCB said, "The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) wishes to inform that, following a review of recent developments and in the best interest of the organisation, the BCB President has decided to release Mr Nazmul Islam from his responsibilities as Chairman of the Finance Committee with immediate effect."
The BCB added, “The decision has been taken in accordance with the authority vested in the BCB President under Article 31 of the BCB Constitution and is aimed at ensuring the continued smooth and effective functioning of the Board’s affairs. Until further notice, the BCB President will assume the role of Acting Chairman of the Finance Committee."
After urging a cautious approach to the impasse with India and cautioning that actions made today would have a consequence ten years hence, Najmul had earlier referred to former captain Tamim Iqbal as an "agent of India." With tensions rising over World Cup-related concerns and growing scrutiny of board governance and player relations, the development occurs at a delicate moment for Bangladeshi cricket.
