The Bangladesh Cricket Board is searching for chances for Bangladesh to play an away series during this year's open August window. This comes after political tensions between the two countries caused Bangladesh's home series against India to be postponed from August 2025 to September 2026. On Wednesday, July 16, Najmul Abedeen Fahim, the Chairperson of Cricket Operations, announced this specific decision. He also talked about the differences between the administrative body's present goals for the national squad and their earlier ideas.
As part of the all-format series, Bangladesh is currently on tour in Sri Lanka. The last Twenty20 International is being played in Colombo today, marking the end of the tour. The BCB wants to provide its players with as much match preparation as possible because the T20 World Cup 2026 is just eight months away.
BCB Explores Away Series:
In addition to scheduling a series for the August window, BCB has another problem to handle. Since the southpaw chose to retire from the red-ball format following the Sri Lanka Test series, they have not yet announced a replacement for Najmul Hussain Shanto. Due to BCB designating three distinct skippers for various game forms, Southpaw resigned from the position.
Fahim said, “For that period, we were thinking of playing matches internally, since previously we had the 'A' team playing against the national side. That was part of a previous plan. Right now, we are thinking of whether we can play against another team or play outside the country for a limited time. If it doesn't happen, then we will play matches internally."
Shanto flatly declined to be the red-ball format captain, despite BCB's desire for him to captain the Test team. "No, actually, even previously, there was adequate communication with him. I feel that both Shanto and we [board] are clear about what happened."
For those who were unaware, Fahim had even flown to Sri Lanka for the second Test of the two-match series to speak with Shanto face-to-face about the whole situation. But at a news conference after the Colombo Test, the then-captain finally announced his retirement from Test captaincy because Shanto believed it was time for him to do so.
