In Sunday's (November 10) second Twenty20 International match against South Africa at St George's Park in Gqeberha, India's bowling attack was led by Arshdeep Singh, who took one wicket for 41 runs in four overs. On the fifth ball of the third over of the run chase, he got rid of Ryle Rickleton for 13 runs off 11 balls. of the dismissal of the South African opener, Arshdeep has now equalled Jasprit Bumrah's record of 89 wickets in 58 Twenty20 Internationals for India.
Thus far, the current series versus South Africa has not produced the results Arshdeep would have hoped for. He gave up 25 runs in the three overs he bowled in the first Twenty20 International, and his economy rate in the just-finished second game was even worse. That does not, however, lessen his menace as a bowler in the shortest format.
Most wickets for India in T20Is
- Yuzvendra Chahal – 96
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 90
- Arshdeep Singh – 89
- Jasprit Bumrah – 89
- Hardik Pandya – 87
While Bhuvneshwar, who last participated in a Twenty20 International in November 2022, has already dismissed 90 batters in 87 T20Is, Chahal, who was a member of the Indian squad that won the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, has taken 96 wickets in 80 games.
Due to his preservation by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for Test and 50-over matches, Bumrah has not been exposed to T20Is in general outside of important ICC events. In the upcoming year, it is highly likely that Arshdeep will not only surpass Bumrah but also maintain a sizable advantage over him.
Since his July 7, 2022, T20I debut against England in Southampton, Arshdeep has established himself as one of India's top bowlers in white-ball cricket. The Punjabi left-arm bowler finished the 2024 T20 World Cup as the joint-leading wicket-taker. He participated in all eight games for the team captained by Rohit Sharma and dismissed 17 batters.
