After the Sydney Test is over, the captain of India is reportedly planning to retire from the game's longest format. According to the report, Rohit may attempt to persuade the selectors to include him in the pivotal match if India advances to the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
After losing the fourth Test match against Australia in Melbourne on December 30, the Indian squad is in hot water. Their chances of qualifying for the 2024–25 World Test Championship have been harmed by this defeat. They lost the home series against New Zealand 3-0 in October-November, which marked the beginning of a dismal Test campaign.
India skipper Rohit Sharma is carrying the sword because of the team's poor performances and the fact that he hasn't scored any runs. Under him, India had lost all six of their previous Test matches. The India opener has struggled with the bat over the past several months.
Rohit Sharma to retire for good?
Sunil gavaskar said 🎙️- If Retirement is going to happen after this test it can't be Rohit Sharma only. The player who is averaging 30 from last 5 years should be the one who should retire even before Rohit.

The Times of India claims that there are whispers concerning Rohit's position on the team circulating among the BCCI's senior brass and selectors. The Sydney Test is anticipated to be Rohit's final encounter in the format, according to the article, since India's chances of reaching the WTC final appear extremely remote after their loss in Melbourne. Following India's disappointing 184-run loss to Australia in the fourth Test on Monday, there were rumours that he might stand down.
He only managed to score 91 runs at an average of 15.16 in six innings during the New Zealand series, with one score of fifty or more. He has only scored 31 runs at an average of 6.20 and a maximum of 10 runs in five innings of batting during the current Australia tour.
India had only lost three wickets by the end of the second session on the last day of the Melbourne Test, and it appeared that the match would end in a draw because Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal were both established on the crease. However, India lost all seven of their remaining wickets in the third session due to a batting collapse, falling behind 2-1 in the series.
