When Travis Head was dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy during an attempt at a lofted drive in the long-off region during the Champions Trophy semi-final match in Dubai, the Indian players and supporters celebrated. The hitter who had previously given the team nightmares was gone.

The umpire gave India batsman Shubman Gill a warning after he caught Australia's Travis Head during Tuesday's Champions Trophy semi-final in Dubai. Head made a mistake when he pulled off Varun Chakravarthy's delivery on the second ball of the ninth over of Australia's innings. He lofted the ball in the direction of long-off, and Gill made a fantastic grab after covering a lot of ground. Gill made a clean catch, but the umpire wasn't entirely happy with his quick release of the ball after touching it. Consequently, he warned the child.

Umpire's Verdict for Shubman Gill:

"The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder's person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement," the MCC rule stated. Although Gill made the catch cleanly, he was still warned for releasing the ball too early.

Australia decided to bat and, with captain Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne at the helm, reached 76 for 2 after 15 overs. Chakravarthy removed Head (39) in the penultimate over of the first powerplay, while Mohammed Shami removed Cooper Connolly (0) in the third over. In remembrance of domestic cricket star Padmakar Shivalkar, who died of an age-related ailment, the Indian players are wearing black armbands.

Speaking of the game, after 41 overs, the Australians are now at 214/6. Steve Smith, the Australian captain, struck four fours and one six in a resolute 73-run innings off 96 balls. Glenn Maxwell, who was out for just seven runs, swiftly followed him to the pavilion after he was bowled by Mohammed Shami in the 37th over. Ben Dwarshuis is batting with Alex Carey, who is currently holding one end up.
