In the opening Twenty20 International of the five-match series at Trent Bridge, India Women thrashed England Women by 97 runs. The team captained by Smriti Mandhana won handily despite being without their full-time captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, who was rested as a precaution after suffering a head injury during the warm-up match against the ECB Select XI.

Lauren Bell's numbers of 3/27 were the highlight of England Women's poor play on the field and with the ball. Both Sophie Ecclestone and Em Arlott were a little pricey, but they each took a wicket. For Nat Sciver-Brunt and her girls, it wasn't just ordinary loss. Their three-match T20I series loss against Australia Women at Chelmsford in July 2019 by 93 runs was surpassed by the 97-run loss, which was their biggest in T20Is by runs.

After being called in to bat first, India Women put on a dominant batting display, scoring a respectable 210/5 in their 20 overs. With a 77-run stand, the openers established a strong foundation. Smriti Mandhana brilliantly anchored the innings, while Shafali Verma scored a fast 20 before falling. Mandhana, who was in outstanding form, quickly scored 94 runs with Harleen Deol. Mandhana scored her first T20I century, and Deol made a quick cameo of forty-three. India reached a commanding total thanks to late contributions from Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma, who scored vital runs.

During the run chase, England lost wickets at regular intervals. They had already lost three wickets, even though they had scored 58 at the end of the powerplay. In the end, Sciver-Brunt fought a solitary battle with 66 off 42 balls. But the other end offered her absolutely no assistance. The standout performance of debutant N Shree Charani was 4/12 in 3.5 overs. She received good compliments from Radha Yadav (2/15 in two overs) and Deepti Sharma (2/32 in three overs). Arundhati Reddy (1/18 in two overs) and Amanjot Kaur (1/22 in three overs) each contributed a wicket.
