With India currently behind 0-1 in the current series against England and having just lost the opening match to England, head coach Gautam Gambhir's time in Test cricket hasn't been great. Thus far, Gambhir's term has produced a range of outcomes in various formats.
He has won 13 of 15 games in T20Is, giving him a 90% victory record. He has a 72.72% overall success rate in ODI, including a Champions Trophy victory in 2025. India has played 11 Test matches since assuming control, however, they have only won three, lost seven, and drawn one in red-ball cricket.
Despite five hundred, the recent five-wicket loss to England at Headingley has drawn a lot of attention. There are now major questions over leadership and execution in the Test system due to India's inability to win games from positions of dominance. Aakash Chopra, a former batter for India, criticised Gambhir's performance. Chopra feels that Gambhir cannot avoid responsibility, but Shubman Gill, as a new captain, deserves time.
India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir under scrutiny:
He added, “There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir. The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket and red-ball cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches. He has won 2 matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, we lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia, and one against England. He has been losing and losing."
He further added, “His performance in white-ball cricket has been good. The team has been playing well. But in Test cricket, I think the questions are going to be there. And I think there is a lot of pressure on this series. If this series doesn't go well, God forbid, I hope it goes well. I really want Indian cricket to do well. But if the England series doesn't go too well, then there will be a question mark. Where are they going and what are they doing? Because the selectors feel that whatever team management is asking for, it is being given. The type of player you want, the number of players you want, and the player you are pointing at are being given. So, if this is the case, then you also need to deliver the results. Period. There is no excuse."
The bottom order in India's performance in Leeds was dismissed for just nine runs in both innings, catch opportunities were missed, and the bowling was subpar. The visitors were unable to maintain pressure for extended periods of time, despite some outstanding individual performances. According to the former, Gambhir has received everything he requested, and the only thing left to do is produce outcomes.
