As India's Test captain, Shubman Gill had a fantastic debut. With an undefeated 127 on Day 1 of the inaugural Test match against England at Headingley, the young player not only led his team from the front but also made history. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 101, and the visitors finished the day with a 359/3 record. However, a little technical glitch has put Gill in peril despite his strong innings.

In the opening Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday, June 20, Shubman Gill made his leadership debut, showcasing his batting ability. He delivered on his promise and placed his team in a strong position by leading India from the front with a spectacular knock. With Team India at 276/3 after 70 overs, Gill is well on his way to a historic century after hitting his fifty. However, Gill made a mistake that could result in him taking the brunt of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) criticism, even if he had a fantastic start to his captaincy with the bat. The 25-year-old may be subject to ICC disciplinary action for violating the dress code.

IND vs ENG 1st Test Highlight:

Disciplinary action may still be taken for the violation. Gill might be fined 10–20% of his match fee and possibly given a demerit point if it is deemed a Level 1 offence. The match referee has the last say and must determine whether the infraction was intentional or unintentional. Gill might be able to get away with merely a warning if he wore black socks because he had no other options.

Richie Richardson, the match referee for the first Test between India and England, will decide if Shubman Gill will be fined. The Indian Test captain may face consequences if the referee observes a dress code breach. The referee would have to view it as a purposeful Level 1 offence for this to happen. If found to be the case, the sanction can be between 10% and 20% of his match fee.

Gill might not face any consequences, though, if his decision to wear black socks was an accident, possibly because his white socks were damp. The match referee's assessment of the circumstances determines the outcome. While more serious Level 2 offences can result in higher fines and even bans, it's essential to note that Level 1 offences can lead to fines of up to 50% of the match fee and potentially incur demerit points. However, these penalties are less common for clothing-related issues unless they are combined with other types of misconduct.
