Fast bowler Shamar Joseph's injury has dealt a serious setback to the West Indies ahead of their two-match Test series against India. Johann Layne, a 22-year-old all-rounder, has been selected to replace him. Due to an unidentified injury, Joseph has been out of commission.
The 24-year-old was supposed to lead India's pace attack, but his absence makes the visitors reevaluate their bowling strategy. In preparation for the forthcoming white-ball series against Bangladesh, which starts on October 18 with three ODIs and three T20Is, Cricket West Indies indicated that Joseph will go through additional evaluation and should be healthy.
IND vs WI 2025 Major Updates:
The all-rounder Johann Layne, who was born in Barbados, has already appeared in 19 first-class matches. He has taken 66 wickets at an average of 22.28, including four five-wicket hauls, demonstrating his great skill with the ball. In 32 innings, Layne has amassed 495 runs with the bat, including two fifties. However, Shamar Joseph, who took 51 wickets in just 11 Test innings with an economy rate of 3.81 and an average of 21.66, will be leaving the West Indies. Without a player like Joseph, the pace battery will be led by Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph.
The West Indies team, meanwhile, landed in India on Wednesday morning and will start getting ready on Saturday with a training session at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. On October 2, the first Test starts at the same location, and the second match is held in Visakhapatnam. Following their June–July 2025 home series against Australia, this series marks the West Indies' second assignment in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle. The visitors will face a difficult task because India is predicted to be strong at home.
Shamar's comeback to the West Indies lineup has not yet been announced, but Joseph's injury makes room for rookie Layne. Joseph will reportedly undergo a new evaluation before the Bangladesh white-ball series, which will begin on October 18 and feature three ODIs and three T20Is between the nations. Since India will be taking a brief vacation after the Asia Cup final on September 28, the first Test match between the West Indies and India is currently set to start on October 2.
