Alzarri Joseph Fined for Breaching ICC Code in First ODI Against BAN

West Indies speedster Alzarri Joseph was fined 25% of his match money on December 8 for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against Bangladesh at St. Kitts and Nevis. Joseph used an audible obscenity, which is against Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Before play began, Joseph violated the rules by using derogatory and abusive words in response to an umpire's warning not to put his spikes on the field. Gregory Brathwaite, the fourth umpire, reported the event, which resulted in disciplinary action.

The incident happened during a conversation with the fourth umpire before play began. After being told not to wear his spikes on the field, Joseph allegedly used derogatory and hostile remarks. In addition, Joseph was given one demerit point for the violation—his second in as many months.

Penalties for Level 1 violations of the ICC Code of Conduct include one or two demerit points, an official reprimand, and a fine of up to 50% of the player's match fee. There was no need for a formal hearing because the pacer acknowledged the offence and agreed to the suggested punishment. Charges were brought by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Asif Yaqoob, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite. Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees oversaw the judgment.

The hosts ended an 11-match losing record against Bangladesh with a five-wicket triumph despite the disciplinary setback. The team put on several outstanding efforts as they chased a target of 295, with Sherfane Rutherford and Shai Hope particularly noteworthy. Hope's 88-ball 86 and Rutherford's first ODI century (113 off 80 balls) were vital in the chase. Following an early collapse, the pair restored the innings, and Justin Greaves' undefeated 41 off 31 balls added the finishing touch.
