Jofra Archer's injury to his right thumb has forced him to miss the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which is a sad situation for the English cricket squad. On Wednesday, May 21, the England and Wales Cricket Board verified the development on their official website. Over the course of the following two weeks, Archer will undergo another evaluation by the team's medical staff to determine when he can resume playing cricket. Three ODIs (May 29–June 3) will open the white series against the West Indies, followed by an equal number of T20Is (June 6–June 10).

On May 4 of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), Archer suffered the injury while playing for the Rajasthan Royals against the Kolkata Knight Riders. He will be "reassessed over the next fortnight to determine when he may return to action," according to England. In order to participate in the England Lions against India A in the next three-match T20 series, the 30-year-old was left out of the team.

Jofra Archer Not Playing in ODIs:

For a considerable amount of time, Archer has been dealing with a series of chronic injuries. This includes a stress fracture to his back and an elbow issue that has necessitated several surgeries. In May of last year, he returned to international competition in time for the T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies. Archer participated in the Champions Trophy earlier in 2025 before the IPL.

England is already without their other pacer, Mark Wood, for the five-match Test series that begins a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Due to Archer's propensity for injuries, England will be without him for the entirety of the series and have already called up 27-year-old seamer Sam Cook for the first time. With 321 first-class wickets at an amazing average of 19.85, England thinks his experience could be useful in supporting an injury-plagued assault.
