The Adelaide Strikers, a women's Big Bash League team, have announced that South African captain Laura Wolvaardt has agreed to a two-year contract extension. The 26-year-old will stay with the Strikers till the conclusion of WBBL 12 after being selected as the team's pre-draft overseas signing.
The team is hoping to recover from a dismal WBBL 10 campaign, and Wolvaardt's comeback will be a huge help. The Strikers, who were aiming for an unprecedented hat-trick of championships, only won three of their ten games and ended up in seventh place. Despite the team's general problems, Wolvaardt managed to score 193 runs at a 24.12 average.
Laura Wolvaardt Gets Candid:
Wolvaardt was a reliable force in the top order, averaging 24 runs over nine games, whereas Weber WBBL|10 was less productive for the Strikers. Laura Wolvaardt said, "I'm absolutely delighted to be extending my time with the Adelaide Strikers for another two seasons. The club has become a second home to me, and I've made so many incredible memories here, especially our back-to-back championship wins. While last season didn't go as we hoped, I'm incredibly excited about the future and determined to help bring more success to the Strikers and our amazing fans. I can't wait to get back to Adelaide with the team."
Now that Wolvaardt is back, the Adelaide Strikers will try to assemble a potent team around her. With local players like Katie Mack, Bridget Patterson, and Jemma Barsby now without contracts, the team still has a number of list positions available. The club will need to use their second pick in the June 19 foreign draft to assemble their WBBL 11 team. Luke Williams, head coach of the Strikers, spoke candidly about Wolvaardt's signing.
He said, "Laura is a world-class player and a vital part of the Strikers family, so we are ecstatic to have her sign on for two more years. Her skill with the bat, combined with her leadership and experience, is invaluable. She has consistently performed under pressure and played a huge role in our previous championship successes. We know she will be a key pillar for us as we build towards a strong WBBL|11 season and beyond."
