For a long time, Mohammed Shami has not been active. The Champions Trophy in March was his most recent international cricket match. He then played in the 2025 Indian Premier League; however, he was left off the India vs. England Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy roster.
Before the England side was chosen, Shami was reportedly even consulted by the BCCI selection committee, which Ajit Agarkar led. The pacer himself, though, was unsure of his level of fitness. Shami was left out of the England squad due to personal doubts about his fitness, which also prevented him from playing in India's five-match series against Australia.
Shami declared that he did not wish to blame anyone for his expulsion from the team. The 34-year-old clarified that he was ready and fit for the Asia Cup, but he added that he has no control over selection. Shami also gave an important update on his performance on the Bronco Test.

News24 Sports quoted Shami saying, "I don't blame anyone for non-selection or complain about it. If I'm right for the team, select me; if I'm not, then I have no issues with it. Selectors have the responsibility to do what's best for Team India. I have a belief in my abilities that if and when I'm granted an opportunity, I'll give my best. I'm working hard."
He further added, "If I can play the Duleep Trophy, then why won't I be able to play T20 cricket? Right now, I don't have any hope (about my international return). If they play me, I'll try to perform and give my 100 per cent. Whether they play me or not, that's not in my hands. If I'm playing the Duleep Trophy, five-day cricket, I'm available for all formats. I was called to Bengaluru, and I have cleared the fitness test (Bronco), and now I’m ready to go back."
Shami's most recent appearance for India was during their Champions Trophy 2025 championship run. He had a successful IPL after that. He was left off the Indian Test team's five-match England tour roster. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly expressed concerns about his physical condition and capacity to manage the workload.
