The Champions Trophy 2025, the ICC (International Cricket Council) major cricket carnival, began on Wednesday, February 19, in Karachi, with the opening match between the hosts, Pakistan, and New Zealand. After winning the toss, captain Muhammad Rizwan chose to bowl first. Pakistan chose to bowl first after winning the toss, and it was a wise choice as Abrar made a significant breakthrough by getting rid of New Zealand opener Devon Conway.
With the removal of opener Devon Conway in the opening game, the Green Shirts demonstrated their potent bowling attack, which they are known for. Notably, in the main event, the New Zealander was the first batter to be disqualified. In relation to the Black Caps, they opened with the Conway-Will Young pair, who got off to a cautious start and appeared capable of providing a strong start for the first wicket. However, the host quickly gained a much-needed breakthrough as leg spinner Abrar Ahmed was introduced into the attack.

Abrar's carrom ball struck Conway's off-stump after he failed to pick it up. The ball simply passed him to upset the timber, but the left-handed batter was ultimately out for 10 runs while playing for the turn. It's interesting to note that the bowler had a distinctive celebration after taking the wicket, which seemed to suggest that he was making fun of Devon Conway for not being able to choose his variation at all.
Speaking of the match, Kiwi superstar Kane Williamson took over at number three following the departure of Devon Conway. Regretfully, he did not play the lengthy and exciting innings for which he is renowned. Williamson got out cheaply for just one run when he edged the ball through to the wicketkeeper thanks to a stunning outswinger from pacer Naseem Shah.
