The Indian ODI skipper, Rohit Sharma, has been the talk of the town for the past several weeks. Several sources claim that Sharma is not part of the Indian team's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. In both the game's smallest and longest formats, the veteran has already hung up his shoes. Three ODIs are scheduled for October 19, 23, and 25 of the October 2025 trip of Australia. According to reports, before the series starts, Rohit and Kohli might both formally announce their ODI fates. If verified, it will be the final opportunity for Indian fans to watch Rohit play in the 50-over format.
Just weeks before the start of the five-match away Test series against England, Rohit decided to end his T20I career after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America and defeating South Africa in the final. He then made the same decision in the red-ball format.

The veteran made these decisions to concentrate entirely on the ODI format, where he hopes to influence the upcoming World Cup, particularly after losing the 2023 edition's final in Ahmedabad to Australia, despite being undefeated throughout the competition. However, it appears that the BCCI has a different strategy in this area.
During his 273 appearances in ODI matches, Rohit amassed 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76, with 32 hundreds and 58 half-centuries. He is among the top batsmen in this format because of his three double hundreds in ODIs. He most recently led India to victory in the Champions Trophy in Dubai. According to renowned Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar, the two will not be included in the team for the 2027 ICC tournament.
