In addition to playing brilliantly for Punjab Kings in the just-finished 2025 Indian Premier League, Shreyas Iyer was in scorching form for India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Mumbai right-hander, who finished as India's top run scorer in the ICC tournament, scored 604 runs in 17 games for Punjab Kings between February 19 and March 19 at three locations in Pakistan and one in Dubai.

Additionally, Shreyas Iyer excelled in the 2025 Champions Trophy, helping India win the championship for the first time since 2013. In the global tournament, he ended as the second-highest run scorer. Even though the selectors chose India's team for the next five-match Test visit of India without considering the Indian batter, it appears that he may be getting some exciting news soon. The 30-year-old has now formally entered India's white-ball captaincy contest, according to a report published in the Indian Express on Saturday, June 7.

Shreyas Iyer goes viral:

The report included a remark from one of the key decision-makers in Indian cricket. It stated, “Right now he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he has also now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race."

Iyer has so far participated in 14 Test matches, 70 ODIs, and 51 T20Is. He last represented India in a Test match in February 2024, while he last played in a T20I match against Australia in December 2023. Iyer, who last year guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 championship, has established himself as a successful domestic cricket captain, but he has never been allowed to lead the Indian men's side in any competition.

To date, Shreyas has captained 100 Twenty20 games. Teams have won 61 games and lost 37 when he has been in charge. The right-handed batsman, meanwhile, had guided teams to 29 victories out of 42 games in List A cricket. As captain, he has only lost ten List A games. When the Men in Blue visit Bangladesh in August 2025 to play three ODIs and as many T20Is, Shreyas is anticipated to make his next debut for Team India.
